My take on Website Readability

Yale's School of Art website is really terrible. What do oranges have to do with 2011? I'm not sure what was going through their minds when they made it but I think that websites should be clean cut, even with the creativeness. It's extremely hard to read and there is way too much going on. I suppose they were trying to make "high art" in their website but its not really portraying the way it should, it just looks cheap. They need to hire a new website designer asap!

Claire Baxter is an Art Director, Sr. Designer, and Brand Manager. Her website is amazingly creative but at the same time so easy to navigate. It took me just a second to find out what is her title for her career! It's hard to find a website that is so appealing and easy to read all in one but she has accomplished that nicely.

Eco-Friendly vs. News

General Electric took a different approach when creating the "smart grid" website. Instead of using lots of words to clutter the website, they created an interactive website that talks about what it happening in the animations. I find this to be a good use of current technology to get a new age idea across. the website is about saving energy and what GE is doing to help, and to show it you interact with the website to change the world. Smart Grid

Haven Works is a website that is a "News Reference Facts Information Sources Intelligence" cite that is like a patchwork of ugliness put together.I feel like the web designers tried to put up every color in HTML possible. The website follows a general table outline but then overran the lines with images and created a banner that looks like the internet threw up on it! Haven Works

Bad VS Good

Bad Website

When you make a website you should try to avoid having your website look like lingscars.com. There are too many pictures all over the website. Most of the pictures are moving and it makes it hard to focus. The website doesn’t have a color scheme. There are way too many colors and the fonts are all different sizes. There are also way too many different topics on each page. At least they were consistent with their horrible format throughout the whole site. I can’t believe anyone would think this website ever okay to publish. Everything is clustered and it’s hard to read. If this website is supposed be their business then they are making themselves seem unprofessional.

Good Website

If you want to make a good website you should look at the layout of allmusic.com because the website is organized and is easy to navigate. The website has a consistent color scheme and font style. Also all the ads on the website can relate to the users of the website. All the things on the website relate to the same topic.

The Good and the Bad

I'm gonna start off with the good website. This is the website for the WWE. I like the website because it's easy to read, isn't cluttered, and is easy to navigate. The color of the font contrasts with the color of the background making it legible to the reader. Although the website has a lot on it, it doesn't seem to be too "busy". You don't feel overwhelmed by all the things. Navigation is conveniently located at the top of the site. From there you can get to anywhere else on the site. This bar with all it's links is on all the pages of the website so that you are never lost. Overall, I think it is a very good website.

Now for the bad. This website is obviously very terrible. Lots of the paragraphs get mushed together, it's too cluttered, and links seem to be all over the place. While the words are black on white, giving it contrast, it still isn't easy to read. The paragraphs are too narrow, making it kind of hard to read. There is way too much going on. There are way too many links, pictures, and "stuff" in general. I would hate to have to find my way around this sea of links. I cannot see myself ever wanting to return to this website.

Nike Company vs. Yale University School of Art

We have all probably come upon sites that either catch our eye or turn our attention away while searching the web. Through these experiences, we have categorized what we consider “good” and “bad” websites. One good website that I have found is that of the Nike Company . When you first enter the site, it gives you the option of choosing your region (such as the United States and “EspaƱol”, to name a few). To me, this proves the credibility of the site. Because the Internet is accessible to so many, people are able to put up websites that are similar to the real website, but not the same. For example, because Nike is a very large name around the world, a site may be out there that pretends to be the Nike Company or selling Nike products (I could not find any sites that pretend to be Nike on Google because the main searches are pretty legit. Nike is a big name, but if I had searched further, I am sure I would find a fake Nike website). But the Nike website is very distinctive and proves its credibility. Also, the site is pleasing to look at. It has many options to look at, but is categorized in an easy-to-understand manner. The site also has a sports theme (obviously) and is strategically placed in the background. This allows those that are strangers to the Nike name know what the company is all about. When entering the Nike site, it is apparent that it is professional and attracts many viewers. This is what I would call a “good” website.

On the other hand, there is the website for Yale University School of Art. Upon entering this website, there are random images of spinning oranges and illegible cursive writing. I was instantly confused on the function of this website; it looks as if a child designed it. Further investigation reveals that this site is a product of the art students, who contribute to its design. Though this may be a good idea, it does not attract viewers that are new to the site. In fact, I did not even think that I was visiting a real school website. Also, this site has boring font and barely uses capital letters. For a college website, I do not think this is very professional. I would consider this to be a “bad” website because of the confusion it creates from the get-go. One page even changes patterns, which makes me think that I switched pages, when I really didn’t. It’s really bad.

Developers... Why you no have good website?

In the world of the internet, there are good and bad. Things seem wonderful when at first glance but as soon as you enter the site you wish you never entered. Arngren.net is a perfect example of a website you wish you never saw. It's a catalog designed to look like a catalog like the ones you find in your mail, and it is awful! You have to scroll and scroll through slides and slides of obnoxious advertisements for products you've never even seen or heard of with not only outrageous names but outrageous prices. I recommend avoiding entering this website if you value the health of your eyes and your colon. But just in case you are daring enough to sustain eye bleeding and a bowel movement I'll post the link below.

However, the website Moodstream.Gettyimages.com is an extensive flash version of a media streaming website. Its fluent streamlined buttons and menu drop downs and expressive styles and mixtures make this website more then an eye candy for anyone who enjoys a good media website. The website allows you to adjust the mood levels to the level you feel you're at, kind of like a personal quiz. After you are finished you simply click refresh stream and the website will automatically reset accordingly. As far as I am concerned, I'm thoroughly impressed. The link to the website is posted below.

Good and Bad Websites: The Difference

Well let's start with the bad one first. This website was chosen as the bad example because of the irony. They claim to be computer specialists and their website design skills. To make matters worse they even offer website design as one of their services which I honestly hope is their version of a sense of humor. Their main page and every single page is dreadfully boring with nothing but a distracting animation at the top. Their "clients" link is broken, which makes me think they have no clients. It's a reasonable assumption considering they are supposed to be computer specialists and they can't even make a decent website. Furthermore, most of their pages are nothing but bulleted lists with the same black text and white background. The last thing I'd like to add before going to throw up is that the only page with pictures on it is the "links" page which takes visitors to other sites that take people away from this disaster.

Now, and example of good website would be the NFL's official website. As soon as you enter the site you see good size picture slide show in the center of the screen with links to the latest videos and articles at the bottom of the picture show. Another nice thing is that their color scheme matches the colors of their logos and links to every team are available by clicking on the team’s logo in the top banner. Another great feature is the navigation bar at the top, it isn't too big where it takes over the whole site, but it isn't so small where you can't read it. The links here bring you to any page a football could care about (standings, stats, scores, etc.). Unlike the other site, none of the links are broken and it has a good design scheme. I think it is pretty safe to say that the NFL didn't hire E.S.I. to design their website; they went to someone who actually had skills.
